I take a melatonin/valerian cocktail on occasion. The trick is to get to bed early so you can sleep it off. I feel groggy all the next day if I don't give myself more than six hours of melatonin induced sleep. It's a tough call to make though if you're dealing with occasional sleeplessness. Usually by the time I realize I'm having a problem its too late to pop pills. Sometimes warm milk might help. It might be wise to establish a schedule. That way you can determine early on if you'll need assistance.
