I made the decision to purchase a belt after reading these three articles.

^^He's pretty clear about where he stands!

The gym has some belts so I might experiment with them and see how I feel. Thanks for all the responses!

From a purely personal perspective, I find that the belt gives me extra confidence. I understand what Tann and Pull said about increasing your likelihood of injury because you get careless with the belt on. That's certainly a possibility but I treat all weights the same and find the belt to be a tremendous aid. Typically, I'll start wearing it on my final warm up single (around 85% of 1RM) before my 5 heavy singles. I wear it at this point for pressing, squat, deads and even bench even though I may not actually need it on the last one.

JB mentioned wearing a belt as a means to prevent a sports hernia. Any information on this?

Here's my 2 cents, personally I wear the belt for extra security of mind (if that makes sense) I am able to focus on bracing my abs against the belt when working heavier loads (350+ on squats, high 400s + on dead, and same on bench)

I popped my sciatic nerve some years back pulling 600, not sure if I was just off my game that day or what but I wasn't wearing a belt. I had just worked up to 550 the week before, now I won't chance it. If that little voice tells me put the belt on then I will usually listen or don't attempt the lift. I guess it is just one of those things that come with experience.

I don't know if there is truly any "real" general benefits, but I do know that everyone is different and it boils down to a personal preference.
