Seriously this is the best suggestion I can give, Linux. Started using linux several years ago and haven't looked back. No nasty's, consistently fast and now days not so steep a learning curve.

I like pclinux for every day use About PCLinuxOS PCLinuxOS

Want to see who is trying to mess with your computer through the internet? Set up wireshark and watch as people try to hack in. Log their IP addresses and then do as you please. Check out the scapy module for python for easy ways to hit them back.
