Shock, is when a foreign person phones you and you haven't studied their language in over 6 years I survived, though; well, actually, I was complimented

This reminded me of an anecdote...when I was in Brussels back in '02, out of an entire city filled with Belgians these people two ladies cam up to me and asked for directions in broken French. I laughed and responded in English that I myself was a tourist and have no idea how to help them.

There, that innocuous story should kill this thread!

Kinda funny really, 'cos my friend is Dutch and speaks no English...I had a similar encounter to you when I was in Germany, two hikers came up to the car I was sat in and asked something, no idea what they said aside from the fact thta they were asking for directions, and in great colloquial German I responded "nicht verstehen (??)" fortunately the family I was visting had taught me that a few hours earlier. The two guys kept looking back at the car as they walked on, they just look dumbfounded.
I know some people will say that we should be able to speak the languages but you can only learn so many and I was 17y/o at the time

I know what you mean. There is a large Latin American community in my town and while I have studied Spanish and can make do in a store or restaurant, they speak so fast I can barely keep up.

I'm with you there, just listening to the dubbing on films, with the Spanish, it's mega-fast stuff. And it's one thing to speak and write a language and another to be able to understand the spoken word; but it's because the phonemes are different within each language and we pick up on those...so, if we start listening to CDs/DVDs/songs etc, even if we don't understand a word of it, the brain or the ear starts to recognise those phonemes and we are then able to pick up on these when hearing the spoken language, thus making it much easier for us to understand.

PS: I didn't edit your post, I just accidently hit the edit and not the quote button
