De Winter van De Belgica, excellent book about the first ship to the South Pole in 1897 and how they lost men through freak accidents and ate penguin meat raw to cure scurvy, got stuck in the ice etc. Written in novel format and hilarious at times though based on actual facts.

Perhaps you would enjoy a book by the author I am currently reading, Dan Simmons:

Amazon.com: The Terror: A Novel (9780316017459): Dan Simmons: Books Amazon.com: The Terror: A Novel (9780316017459): Dan Simmons: Books

Quote:
Hugo-winner Simmons (Olympos) brings the horrific trials and tribulations of arctic exploration vividly to life in this beautifully written historical, which injects a note of supernatural horror into the 1840s Franklin expedition and its doomed search for the Northwest Passage. Sir John Franklin, the leader of the expedition and captain of the Erebus, is an aging fool. Francis Crozier, his second in command and captain of the Terror, is a competent sailor, but embittered after years of seeing lesser men with better connections given preferment over him. With their two ships quickly trapped in pack ice, their voyage is a disaster from start to finish. Some men perish from disease, others from the cold, still others from botulism traced to tinned food purchased from the lowest bidder. Madness, mutiny and cannibalism follow. And then there's the monstrous creature from the ice, the thing like a polar bear but many times larger, possessed of a dark and vicious intelligence. This complex tale should find many devoted readers and add significantly to Simmons's already considerable reputation. (Jan.)

^^ that sounds interesting, once I've read the book to hubby (have to translate as I read) I'll certainly consider looking into one of his books.

Dan Simmons newer books are doorstoppers, but he is probably one of the best American authors.

His book on Dickens is a page turner, despite it's seemingly unusual theme...

His book Song of Kali is a shocking look at the city of Calcutta. Though he is labeled horror or fiction, his modern books are really not rooted in those genres.

Genres can be so borderline sometimes, fictional horror has more atmosophere than film IMO because the immagination has to play a larger part and no two people will see the words in the same visual way.

As long as they're not as bad as a Salman Rushdie book I had to read during my degree, they'll be okay.

Good to hear. I've only ever had to read one of his books and quite frankly it was utter tripe.

When I think of Rushdie, all I can think of is his wife...but that's a topic for another thread...

Midnight's Children.
Won the 'Booker of Bookers' prize in 1985, I think. They give that out only 4 times a century. And it truly deserved it, IMO.
Imagery is other-wordly. Story is powerful and politically driven.

Salman Rushdie's best work. IMO.

Churchill's Secret Agent.

Based on a true story of a man who went behind enemy lines during WWII and completed missions vital to the Allied victory.
