Default oly lifting with no bumper plate...

i've been doing cleans (well hang cleans lately) and holding onto the decent is a bitch/****ing up my left bicep tendon.

i was thinking of designating one of my bars at home for bull **** like cleans and one arm snatches...

i was going to just buy a piece of plywood and foam pads. throw it down in my back yard when i workout. and just use a regular bar and regular plates

how bad would it **** up my stuff? how long would the bar last before breaking? the plates?

You could probably find a strongman website with directions on how to build bumper plates. I'll look for some links and post them when I find them, unless someone else does first. I know that you could get old car tires and somehow make plates with them. Then you could throw that **** around as much as you want.

EDIT: Here is one link I found:

Here is another link. Tire Plates are listed about 3/4 of the way down.

I can't wait to have a house and a garage again. Don't know when that will be though.

I guess I would go the tire-building route instead of throwing my bar on the ground. It seems really simple to make, and won't cost much at all.

Here in Australia we can get rubber mats fairly cheap, $17.95 for four, each of which is 20 inches across. I use them in my garage to damp the sound and so that it's a bit more comfortable to lie down for stretches. Two layers would be enough for dropping bars.

A cheap bar is going to eventually break if tossed down hard lots of times. More than that the issue for the Olympic lifts is that the bar is a bit different. A powerlift or regular recreational weightlifting bar needs to be fairly stiff, an Oly bar needs a bit of spring in it. It also needs that the weights can spin around.

If you've a limited but not completely broke budget, it's best to get a good bar and then cheap weights.
