Default Best Guitarist of all time

What's up guys. I'm a music freak. Thought it would be interesting to bring this topic up. Who gets your vote for the best guitarist of all time?

No one I'd rather listen to them Jimi Hendrix. Other then Jimi, who is worthy?

I too like music a lot. I have a few basses that I like to play around with.

Best, is not really something that you can or shold put a label on. There are lots of really good musicians out there. There are a lot of variables that go into each persons viewpoint of what they like, and what is best for them.

There is going to be a big differance between what a non player thinks is good, and what a highly skilled player deems as good. How do you judge somebody? Is it to be based on technical profeciency? Songwriting ability? Or is it that they have to be able to do both. What about the ability to read music? A lot of musicians, don't read music at all.

Hendrix is good, I like a lot of what he did. Through the years though I've learned a lot, and I see things differently today then when I was 20.

In what genre are we speaking as well. Hendrix was an electric, blues rock.
There are traditional classic acoustic guitar players, that can outplay Hendrix in their style of music.

How do you choose?

My vote for "best guitarist" [which probably means guitarist I'd most want to listen to. Is probably Santana he's absolutely amazing. So is Stevie Ray Vaughan. In a more modern style of music John Frusciante is awesome there's plenty of guitarists I love listening to

My numero uno all time favorite is J Mascis. As a guitarist, the uniqueness of his style and solos makes him a pleasure to listen to.

Besides Hendrix, another of my faves who I think is great is Stevie Ray Vaughan! Kenny Wayne Sheppard is good too (but doesn't sing....but we ain't talking singing are we). But that said, I agree with GL. It also has to do with what style of music you like and until you can appreciate all styles equally, how will you truly know the greatest?

Not saying this guys is the best, but a good one for certain. We stumbled on him by accident after we went to see Alan Hayes. This is Eric Tessmer from Austin, TX

And this proves my point about styles. You'll see that I'm in a rut

I do love SRV. I used to sit for hours and try to play like him.

I really don't think question can be answered...I could seriously go on forever naming the best, and why I say they are. SRV, Jimi, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Satriani, Trey Anastasio, BB King, Clapton....and that's just off the top of my head. I could never pick just one...I would have to say all those guys, plus what every one else has already listed, especially Adrian Smith because I'm a Maiden fan(who's getting screwed with no local tour stop), and Dimebag, just because if you ever heard what he can do, you already know..
