Default Is it worth the risk? (advice buying items from over seas)

What's up.

I'm debating at the moment weather to buy a microphone from Ebay.
It's a classic ribbon mic made by Oktava that I've been after for a long time, and I've managed to find a great deal on it. (about £300 including shipping)

However, the microphone is coming from Moscow, where it was manufactured in the mid 1960's.

I've never bought anything online from another country before, so I'm worried about a ton of additional charges due to the importation. (import duties, brokerage fees etc)

I was wondering if anybody here has bought anything from overseas before, and weather they know how it works, and how likely it would be i'd be subjected to additional charges.

Thanks everyone.

I've bought a few things from overseas, yeah. But I'm Australia, not the UK.

I already knew the basics, as it happened, but over here you can just go the offical customs website and get plenty of details anyway. There might well be an equivalent site of the ".uk" variety.

As far as eBay is concerned, it's buyer beware, as ever. Have a look at *all* of their feebdack, be it positive, neutral or negative. Check out the details. If they have 100% positive, that's a good start. Buying via Paypal can provide another level of safety, as well.

I've never bought anything from that part of the world though. No idea if there are any particular things to watch out for, say.

Thanks allot for that, Mic.

It seems the that the things to think about are VAT (which is due on everything anyway) and the possibility of customs charges, considering the item is over £15 in value.

Another thing I worry about with the customs issue, is that they might end up man handling the microphone and breaking it.
Ribbon mics are incredibly delicate.

This guy, knowing the nature of the item, is hopefully going to package it very well.
To have it go through customs and have all of that undone will be ridiculous.
I really can't see them taking care of the item either, because to anyone who doesn't know what they're dealing won't have any clue as to how delicate it is.

Thanks for the heads up man.

All this guys customers are happy, so hopefully i have nothing to worry about.

Considering it's going through paypal too, i'll always have that to fall back on if anything is a miss.

Gotten stuff from china, new zeland and they have been fine. None were consumables, i'm not sure I'd order those, but electronics should be good. On a side note, I thought the title was referring to getting married lol.

Oh right, so it's more likely to be consumables that they stop?

For a ribbon mic from the 60's it might be worth a little risk. Put that thing through a tube amp and put it on reel to reel and you have the makings of the best recorded music humans have ever made.

But, you know that.

Whatever you do, good luck.
