Default Gene manipluation for super soldiers?

http://sofrep.com/30349/gene-doping-...uper-operator/

I came across this article discussing the possibility that China may be doing gene doping and eugenics experiments on its population in order to create a new breed of soldier. China has done such things in the past, such as the creation of Yao Ming from a lineage of top basketball players.

What do you all feel would be the ramifications of having our own program, or even other countries following suit? I am curious to hear what everyone has to say about this issue.

Interesting as this is, its a very VERY vague article. Wr as humans have been practcing this for countless years with animals. Germany and Russia have also been actvely, and not so secretly doing this since the late 1800s. As scary a thought as this is, in all, China would still be generations away from producing a viable "super soldier" based on the fact that all of these mutations are recessive in nature. Recessive+recessive doesn't always mean the recessive gene will be passed on. This is the part of the genome and charactristic trading we do not fully understand, and cannot fully control yet.

I would think that it is so vague since if this is going on, the information around it could be restricted. I would be more surprised if they werent doing this.

They may be generations away, but then again science could have made a number of leaps available that we dont know exist yet. Besides, even if they can add all these genes into a population, they very well might not turn out as top notch soldiers or athletes.

America is one huge genetic experiment. The people who came here from Europe were almost exclusively risk taking bad asses. They got so tired of being pushed around that they left everything they knew, got on a boat, and went across the ocean just based on the idea that there MIGHT be new opportunities when they got wherever they were going. Then, when the Europeans thought they could just keep on telling us what to do, we took them on, broke all the rules of established warfare, and kicked their asses out.

People like to talk about how Americans are egotistical, overconfident, and always believe we're right. But it's just who we are after generations and generations of risk taking bad asses making more little risk taking bad asses.

Poor china is just trying to catch up. Good luck with that. Its way easier to make an athlete than it is to make someone who can truly excel as a warrior.

Lineage is no excuse for bad behavior.

On topic, wouldn't surprise me at all. There's countless examples of situations in history where a variety of performance enhancing drugs were used in a military context. As our understanding of genetics and how we can influence them increases there's bound to be military applications.

No, you get those kinds of fucking retards (egotistical, "overconfident", and "always right") everywhere on this benighted planet. America is not special in that regard. And it's also nothing to do with being "risk taking bad asses". LOL. Nope, just fucktards.

The idea that American characteristics are genetic is an interesting one, but I'm not sure it works that well.

It sounds like you're arguing that Americans are descended from nonconformist bad-asses who decided to strike out on their own. And sure, many of the first settlers were escaping from religious or secular persecution, or had highly enterprising natures. But that was really a small number and since then their contribution to the gene pool is surely dwarfed by the migrants from the late nineteenth to early 20th century.

A lot of these later waves were escaping from economic oppression, and like economic migrants everywhere, in many cases immigration was an act of desperation. Further, it was based on ignorance. For the migrants at the turn of the century, the conditions they faced on arrival were much worse than the ones they left behind (I've just finished reading Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, which is a pretty graphic account of what East Europeans faced when they got to the USA). So what genetic traits do those later immigrants represent? My guess is that who came over was not much to do with character/genetics but usually much more to do with social factors - for example, if there was someone in their community who had already emigrated, if they could scrape together the money for the passage.

I really doubt that differences in 'national character' has much to do with genetics anyway. It's pretty much overwritten by culture and learning experiences.

By the way, I have yet to meet in person a single American who conforms to the type you describe...provided the conversation steers well clear of (a) America (b) guns or (c) sports.

For the record, my post was approximately 60% serious. It was also 60% sarcastic. Why was I able to make a post that's 20% better?
