Just to address the autistic child part of this as a Paramedic I've taken inservice's in re: to their behaviors and was told that holding them will often calm them and they require the stimulation at time, hence the duffel bag . Guess that it doesnt play well on the news though. Was also informed that many of them have paradoxical reactions to the benzo's we use as part of my standing orders for behavioral emergencies. So my hope is we never run into an aggressive autistic person though because unluckily brutane may be the only option.

My wife is a nurse who has worked for years in the mental health field. When she and I were working the nursery at our church one Sunday, a mother let us know that her 5 year old son was autistic, so we'd keep a closer eye on him.

Well, when the boy put a toy down, another kid picked it up and, for lack of a better term, the boy freaked out, yelling, screaming, crying, thrashing his arms around. The way my wife handled it was one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen. She was standing behind him and she wrapped one arm around the boy's chest, holding him very tightly to her, and with her other hand she put some tissues in the boy's hand and made him hold the tissues. She told him to feel how soft those tissues were. I could see the kid feeling and kneading the tissues with his hands and in less than 30 seconds, he was back to normal.

Later she told me it was one of the ways health professionals are trained to deal with an autistic kid having an episode.
