Default Protein powder

I'm really just looking for any advice or input you guys can offer...


This is a general question...I don't eat lots of meat and I can't eat egg anymore so have decided to give protein powder a try just to add a little more easy protein source in to the diet.

So, general questions only...and this is based on 2 brands sold at the local store...I don't want to go internet shop until I've given this a trial run, so the shop will be easier, for this time around.

I'll be using less than they recommend because I only want to add a small amount of extra protein in to the diet, in addition to the fish etc that I will be getting...it's just a small increase.

I realise the 2 brands may not be what people use but my choices are:

Nutri1st whey (choc) cheaper
ProMax (choc) twice the price, unless I read the weight wrong

Chocolate flavour because you generally can't go wrong with that flavour, unlike strawberry etc.



Now, the Nutri1st have an entire range, slimming one etc, but I'm just going for the main whey.

Nutri1st: mainly has 4 ingredients listed, low-ish in carbs and sugar (I think) and just whey, basically.

ProMax: has lots of ingredients listed, BCAAs, CLA etc, but is also higher in carbs (as sugar) from what I remember.




So:

I have a slight issue with dairy but not sure this will cause an issue but will have to watch that and if anything occurs, I can remove it from the diet and go completely dairy free with either pea or hemp protein...so that will be my problem, one way or the other.


Questions:
  • Do I go for the one that has lower carbs as sugar?
  • Is the protein powder in the cheaper one as good, in theory?
  • Would I benefit more from the added ingredients in the ProMax powder instead of going the base ingredient Nutri1st version?

MY opinion. the closer to just protein you can get, the better. You can always add carbs if you want them.

I agree.

It's better to choose your own sources of other nutrients and vitamins from real foods if you can (as I know you know).

So, unless you need help getting the extra stuff the second powder has in it, keep it simple, Sister!

Just the whey one is the whey(hahahaaaa) to go! The one with more carbs will probably taste a little better with added sugar carbs ect. But if you can stomach the other one go for it! Hope it doesn't doing anything bad to you and add to your list of other crud you need to deal with Babs !

I just buy pure unflavoured WPC in bulk. It's extremely cheap, I actually like what subtle taste it has (!), and protein is somewhere above 80% (can't remember exactly, but it's very high).

Plus, I don't trust a lot of artificial flavours and sweetenings (knowing the companies involved does not help here). Each to his or her own though.

But then again, I know others who swear by flavoured WPC or WPI. Either way, I strongly recommend going with as close to pure as you can stomach.

Of course, you can always add your own flavour/sweetening to a shake, or a recipe, when using pure whey protein.

Ah. Well, fair enough too. I've never really been sure about ideal amounts, and I don't count calories or macros... but last time I did a random check for one day, I think it was very close to my own bodyweight (in pounds), in grams. The "right amount" or "minimum" you hear about so much on the internet.

Have you found such a high intake helps much?

And sorry if this is a bit off topic - could move it to another thread, I suppose...
