Default Doh!!!

30% in Orkney is different to the amount of kids in a 30% study elsewhere, since this is a very small area in relation to others but even so, the facts are:

Issue:

Its emerged that Orkney has the highest percentage of overweight bairns anywhere in Scotland. A report has shown that thirty percent of primary ones in 2011/12 were deemed to be at risk of being overweight or obese - considerably above the national average. And that's a trend which appears to have been consistent. It's a sensitive subject for both parents and the authorities, but one which clearly causes concern. The council says it's been monitoring the situation for the past ten years and that measures were already in place to raise awareness of healthy diets and portion sizes but that ultimately it was up to parents to decide on the food given to their bairns.

One of the responses:

i have never noticed this "problem " in Orkney ........ every single one of us knows the cause and the solution here , but i am sick fed up of parents getting the blame for everything .

Really? Whose fault does she think it is if not that of the parents, especially where the child's diet and exercise is concerned?

Depends on what is constituting "overweight"?
Are they using those grossly skewed BMI charts?

Hubby and myself had wondered that as well; whether they were categorising kids as obese that would normally have been overweight, and those as overweight that would normally fall into the normal range etc.

Having said that, I don't know what the parent is seeing or more to the point refusing to see (the one that commented above) but we certainly see the amount of overweight kids about, though, there are also a fair number of kids that are very active and all in the normal category, as the BMI goes, which would be reflected by the study due to the 70% that are considered as not overweight/obese.

We also feel that the kids tend to lose weight, possibly, when they go to the middle school because then they get more activity anyway with sports and such, because in the slightly older age ranges don't appear to be so overweight or not to the 30% range as seen in the primary school ages.

I also see kids start leaning out as they enter puberty (middle school).
I wonder if it's more a problem these days than long ago? Or just a bigger pool?
