Someone said that, Old time bodybuilders and athletes became very muscular and strong, even before supps were invented.
I like to add, that even before fancy diets were invented also.

I have done both. diet and train and diet no training. My results were this. I weighed 178# and was wearing the same exact pair of pants i have on now weighing 198 up to 218 (on cycle). I have always figured that 10#=1 pant size. So, training and atleast some form on maint. diet is very beneficial.

BTW this quote from the article is awesome and my new moto.

"Life happens, and a champion is not measured by how many times he gets knocked down, but by how many times he gets back up."

But like MattB said...he made gains on less then perfect sleep. I did as well. I get 8 hours of sleep maybe 10% of days. And it's not for lack of trying. The body can still produce great gains on less then desirable sleep.

Regarding diet...good training with a horrible diet is always better then poor training and a perfect diet. I'm talking for muscle and strength gains. I'm not advocating a poor diet. But in college, I had to eat what was available. I didn't have a choice.

I ate pizza, cheesecake and lots of milk. And of course mac and cheese with tuna. Far from optimal, but I gained most of my mass on this diet.

The king will always be...more weight on the bar. Over the long haul, this factor is more important then any. The "diet is 80%" business, to me, always seemed like an off shoot of the supplement industry's mumbo jumbo. If they can get you paranoid, then your wallet will open.
i gained most of my size on a shit diet 2. and as far as the 80% crap i truly believe it is the supplement market, as far as i know, no one started uttering that claim until supplements started to become what they are today.

Is diet 80% for those on the love juice? Er, no. Then why is this 'truth" perpetuated in bodybuilding magazines?

because they make a lot of their money from supplement ads, so the more they help sell those, the more supplement companies will pay.

If we believe diet is 80% of progress, supplements take on a greater importance.

And if we believe that diet is 80% of the game, and that the other 20% comes from Cutler or Coleman's routine, we're basically hung out to dry.

When the gains won't/don't come, we turn to...generally more supplements.
