I still have both the guns my grandfather gave me as a kid. I also have the .38 long revolver that my great uncle was carrying when he was killed in the line of duty by an escaped convict. It has always been a family thing for me.

Every month there is a home invasion in my town (smaller town) all over the front page of the paper. Often this ends in violence, and if that happens to be my home some day, I will be prepared.

I don't know the gun laws in the UK but I do know its kinda freaky walking through an airport with guards waving machine guns around lol.
Anyway one post mentioned the mental aspect of this all. I wonder as a society have we become desensitive to violence. Look at the graphic videos that are out, movies, music. We've always had guns in this country but NOW its an issue? I think there's other issues involved a root to the problem

HARROLD, Texas (AP) In this tiny Texas town, children and their parents don't give much thought to safety at the community's lone school mostly because some of the teachers are carrying concealed weapons.

In remote Harrold, the nearest sheriff's office is 30 minutes away, and people tend to know and trust one another. So the school board voted to let teachers bring guns to school.

"We don't have money for a security guard, but this is a better solution," Superintendent David Thweatt said. "A shooter could take out a guard or officer with a visible, holstered weapon, but our teachers have master's degrees, are older and have had extensive training. And their guns are hidden. We can protect our children."

When it comes to a gun, I would rather have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

What if the gun-carrying teacher flips out? Are they less liable to run amok than other adults? Not a frivolous question, given that teachers are often under stress and in some schools are in confontational situations.

What if the cop flips out?
What if the bank guard flips out?
What if military personnel flip out?
What if the road worker leaning on his shovel on the side of the road flips out?
The "What If" game is silly.

im not sure how i feel about teachers having guns... i think schools have to improve upon their security, who's allowed unescorted access, which doors are able to be opened from the outside, and some sort of security guard...

Just my .02 cents

What if? That is a question that will never be answered. We cannot protect ourselves or anyone else from every what if situation. We need not try.

In this case the school analyzed its situation and put in place measures based on the most likely scenario(s) -

Is it possible the teacher may flip out and kill every one? Absolutely.... But in my opinion that is less likely to happen than by an outside threat... the teachers are trained and presumably evaluated ( before becoming a teacher, I would think) and they would most likely, have a connection to the students that would at least in some small measure serve to minimize the likelihood of them doing harm.

You will never be able to eliminate every threat - Even if you outlaw every gun - someone, somewhere, will find a way to do harm.... it is unfortunately, what it is. The nature of man is not always good.

As for me and mine, I would feel much safer with my child being surrounded by trained, armed, professionals than them being in a place where the only defense mechanism is to run, hide, and hope the bad guys don't win.

The reality is that somebody could "flip out" at any time and do massive damage. That's the way it's been, the way it is, and the way it always will be. No amount of gun control is going to change that fact.

Not really, seeing as the idea of having teachers carrying guns is itself a response to a 'what if' scenario - what if another outsider comes into a school. In fact, one key argument for gun ownership seems predicated on a 'what if' argument - what if I am confronted by an intruder?

I can rephrase it as - teachers are no more immune to going bonkers than anyone else. The argument for them carrying assumes that the 'outside intruder' is the more likely scenario (as SCStrong suggests). Personally, I'm with Nighttrain on this.

If new gun laws are a mad overreaction to a terrible, but still rare tragedy, isn't having armed guards in schools or armed teachers just a different sort of mad overreaction?
