Default Coaches making players run as punishment, a thing of the past?

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/art...nclick_check=1

A sophomore Des Moines High School football player made derogatory comments about the football team. In response, the coach made him run at least 20 hill sprints, complete 20 up-down drills, run two laps around the practice field and then a few more hill sprints — all in 25 to 30 minutes w/o a water break. Not sure if that is overboard or not b/c I don’t know what they’re calling a hill sprint, etc. Still, the coach got suspended for going overboard on discipline—sounds pretty reasonable, I guess.

Yea, the coach went too far, so punish him for it. The vast majority of coaches don’t go too far. Unfortunately, this one incident coach got the attention of the politically correct machine…which naturally took this chance to advance an agenda of “everybody gets a trophy” and “making people run is mean.”

The executive director of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, a man with the unfortunate name of Mike Dick (yes, really), said, regarding the incident, “Good common sense would indicate we’re past using conditioning and running in a punitive manner.” He said that using conditioning as punishment is “almost vindictive in nature.”

Vindictive in nature? Hell, yes it is, and that is the freaking point isn’t it? I can’t remember a single coach at the HS level that didn’t make you run laps or do pushups for being late, mouthing off, or messing up. It is supposed to be punitive in nature b/c it is…say it with me…pun-ish-ment. Aren’t some of the best HS coaches task masters? I mean…. Oh no, we can’t use negative consequences to alter students’ behavior! That would be just like real life, and it would be irresponsible for coaches to prepare them for that, right?

Wonder why we’re raising a country full of kids that lack drive and accountability? It’s b/c of politically correct crap like that. Punish that coach, not the rest of the coaches in the state.

Most coaches would have made the WHOLE TEAM run with him.

Ridiculous. Sheltering children from this is setting them up for failure in later life. Obviously coaches need to be monitored but to suspend him is ludicrous.

When we didn't do what we were supposed to the entire team ran laps. Same in the Army at times. It was an excellent way of teaching these guys what it meant to be part of a team.

+1 on the team thing. Same in the Marines, if one screwed up, everyone else did the running or whatever punishment, all while the offender looked on. It made people start to work together real quick.

And no, he was not going overboard. Kids today are pussies, plain and simple. They don't know what it means to walk to a bus stop, pay for their own shit, do their own work, have any integrity, or God forbid, go without the internet for a day.. I would like to go back in time and slap the idiots that would birth these lazy asses in the future...

What age is a sophomore?

I'd have thought running extra hill sprints and doing laps would be more beneficial than punishment, with all that extra cardio training. If he'd been severely dehydrated then I could have understood but from what I gather, he was fine afterwards, maybe a bit ticked off but that's to be expected anyway.

Sophmores are typically 15 years old. Could also be late 14, rarely 16 though, unless they stayed back a year or two.

good cardio and hill sprints also good for leg strength.I remember when i was at school we were made to run cross country on freezing cold mornings across streams up hills and in the shit and mud and for punishment we would have to run laps around the football pitch and do press ups

I remember in gym class warming up we had to do the amount of exercises the teacher wanted up to. If he said do 12 jumping jacks and someone did 13 by mistake everyone had to redo them. Times have changed but this is being taken too far. The coach did nothing wrong, the kid should have been punished for making a comment he should not have.

so the kid went home and bitched to his mom who made a stink to the school. Running laps is fine. Perhaps the punished could have a camel back on or something for water but otherwise quit the team if you hate it that much or smarten up
