Default Work, going the extra mile

A rant.

I enjoy going the extra mile for customers at work. I don't do it for any other reason than to be helpful. I sure don't expect my boss to reward me. We all know how that ends.

Today I reached the end of my rope. In sales I am often in positions where I buy things for my clients out of my own pocket. I helped a client yesterday, did something nice with my own time but spent $20 of the company's money on some gas for a hand delivery.

Gas isn't cheap. Most times I spend the delivery money out of my own pocket. I'm not required to make hand delieveries, but I like going the extra mile for my clients. Yesterday I didn't have the money one me, so I used the company's card. My boss went nuts.

He never bothers to thank his sales staff for going the extra mile when they do, despite getting sub-par pay, but once a year if you spent an extra few pennies he has a coronary. Talk about short-sightedness. Makes it hard to care at all some days.

Gas isn't cheap. Hand deliveries were the norm for years. Our business reputation was built upon this level of personal care, but these days it's hard to afford gas for the more distant sales. I made a judgment call. Now because of it our boss has decided that all hand deliveries much be approved beforehand, and he's creating a form.

Sounds like he's scared of justifying it to his superiors. Keep doing what you're doing and good things will happen.
