Default Learning a new language, audio CD

Hey folks,

Figured I'd throw this out there, I'm looking to pick up an audio CD which will allow me to learn the conversational basics of a language as I drive to and from work.

Firstly anyone have any recommendations for a product? Remembering it has to be just an audio CD, I can't contiuously play/pause etc.

Secondly anyone have any recommendations for which particular new language I might want to learn?

Cheers.

I don't have a CD to recommend, but as for a language. Spanish is growing in dominance. Or in light of the current world situation, possibly a middle eastern tongue.

If you were in the US I would say Spanish. Not sure what to tell you in the UK. My view is to learn a language you will be able to use. Here Hispanics are now the largest minority group thus ample opportunity to speak Spanish.

Berlitz used to produce audio cds. Not sure if the Rosetta Stone product can be found in audio.

Spanish does sound good, I have some family who speak Spanish.

I have heard of Rosetta Stone, they're supposed to be quite good. Expensive for what they are though, I think since they've been around so long.

I always thought it be cool to speak Russian.

Russian Audio Lessons

Might give it a go my self. Learning a new alphabet, part has always seemed daunting.

Pick your favorite movie and watch it in a different language. 20 times. This immersion style is quite effective couple with products like Rosetta stone.

I took Chinese in college. Wow! Challenging language. Spanish was fairly simple compared to it

Can't comment on the audio, I use Harry Potter audio CD's in Dutch etc, I find the audio CD's for language skills can be really stilted, so listening to fairy tales and such in the choice of language that you want to learn is easier and then just apply that sound to the other sentence structures you want to learn; kiddies stuff also tends to stat you off with the basic word vocabulary.

Look up Grant and Cutler online (they also have an address but I don't have it to hand), they have an excellent range of language material and I've dealt with the a great deal.

As for the language...reasons help in the selection:

The sound
The look
The usage
How many of the nation already speak English (though there is always an element that doesn't)
Work possibilities
The food
The culture
...etc

Something will stand out to you and make that selection easier; the one thing to bear in mind is that whatever language is in vogue today and on the increase will not necessarily be in use to the same degree in 5 years time.

Then there's the grammar, always a stumbling block for some: Norwegian (easy), Danish (harder), Swedish (hardest)....etc.

Some grammars are romance based, Italian, French, Spanish...whilst others are Germanic based as in English, German, Dutch...and then there are a host of others.

But anyway, I decided to refresh my French because there are a few books I want to read and they aren't in English...so, I'm doing French as well now.

Oh, and the colloquial series are very good, by Routledge, IMO.

I have always wanted to speak Japanese. But I do not think it would get you too far here. How about Spanish?
