So, the psycho killer lives in a space better than my first apartment? Yeah, that makes sense. I have to say this...if I ever go off the deep end and just HAVE to go on a killing spree, I'm going to Norway.

Tgey could just put him in a ordinary prison and threat him like any other prisoner, I think this suckers biggest kick is all the publicity and special threatment that he gets.

Except that the US has tragic killing sprees every year, or so it seems, and Norway has had only one. So you could say that yes, it does make sense, because the same culture that treats prisoners so indulgently has produced only one multiple killer, as opposed to many.

Completely hypothetical question for anyone: if it was proven that letting prisoners have lighter sentences (or really nice facilities) somehow reduced the crime rate, would you be opposed to it?

I wouldn't if we had some idea of whether and to what extent incarcerated individuals can be rehabilitated. We already spend a ton of money on our prison system and it costs several times more to keep a person in jail than it does to educate a child or successfully treat a drug addict.

One of the challenges the I see incarcerated individuals facing is that, in many cases, once they have served their time, they are often unable to find meaningful employment. The nature of some crimes prohibit future employment in certain sectors. Left without options, it doesn't surprise me that people may fall back into old habits.

Hey, I'd go there b/c I know I wouldn't get the death penalty or life in prison. Instead, I'd get out in 20 years after living in a place that's nicer than the homes of millions of Americans.

Still, there could be something to the Norwegians' prison focus. It would be worth trying as a small social exeriment in some smaller American prisons.

I wouldn't be opposed to it at all.

I agree. There are LOTS of major business chains that will not hire you if you have a felony of an kind on your record. Others won't hire anyone with a drug conviction (even a misdemeanor). I think that is a big reason why there are so many repeat offenders.

The Man killed seventy seven people, screw crime rates, recidivism rate and rehabilitation.

What about justice, the administering of deserved punishment

Want to eliminate recidivism, never let them out.

The thought of prison keeps me going to work every day. I have to swallow my pride and not smash those that wrong me. Dope is a sure way to fall in with the wrong crowd so I don't use.

Seems to me that if you don't want to go to prison you don't.

I just don't understand your argument. His crime is part of Norway's homicide rate. The various US spree killers are part of the US homicide rate. How can you say 'screw crime rate' when the object of the justice system is to reduce crimes including his?

That's the hypothetical question I asked. I think I know your answer. The irony is, you can rage about justice all you want, but it's still safer to walk down the street in Oslo than in Miami, New York, Washington, LA...

Never let who out exactly? Drug addicts? Murderers? Burglars? Impractical and expensive

Really? You want to smash them? Man, that must be a horrible state to live in.

First, I can care less how safe it is in Oslo or anywhere else in Norway. I raged about nothing, simply asked what happened to the justice that the victims of this man deserve.

If criminals are not released they cannot re offend, letting out those that cannot be trusted again sure has failed historically. (Would you for instance trust the killer of you're children again I wouldn't).

We'll Tann you never get angry and want to hurt someone, really?

Maybe you are Jesus, if so can we hang for a couple of hours?

Should I be expecting the authorities? Maybe I need thirty days of mental health evaluation.

I vote for punishment on the American prison system and the fine gentleman that is clearly misunderstood a fine caliber to the dome....my 2 cents.
