When you say keeping the bar on straight horizontal line do you mean the bar rolls out of position for you during your set up? If so and thats the case make sure your deadlifting on an even/flat floor, the plates you are using (at least the primary ones you place on the bar first) are exactly the same in size and shape. Also make sure the plates are kept together tightly.
