I usually prescribe those to all my new clients and friends that are n00bs. I find it's the fastest way to bring their core strength up.

Once they've mastered the swiss ball squat, then we really start focusing regular squats. Most people's weak link is their core so I make sure to get that out of the way as soon as possible.
