Pah thats nothing. Couple of years ago I say a guy do pull ups only using_ smith machine, bench, ez bar and straps. Quite a sight. To this day I am not sure what was wrong with the pull up bar and weighted belt the gym provided.
Thing is crossfiters they so enjoy prating around a bit (if they are dicks theyll call this still practice) so lots if good photo opps to luck a bit of a prat.
