I have a certain amount of sympathy for that view, which was the main element of the 1960s 'anti-psychiatry' movement. The American DSM has a massive influence, but plenty of psychiatrists and psychologists are fiercely critical of it as a tool for diagnosing psychological problems.

Pirsig's view is an interesting one, but he seems at risk of taking some conditions where someone's brain just isn't functioning at a physiological level and romanticising it simply as non-conformity.

Presumably Pirsig would have the viewpoint that schizophrenia - for example -is a social construction and just a label attached to someone to describe a different view of reality. But some schizophrenics almost literally cannot join two thoughts together. They're not thinking in some daring new way that doesn't fit with the establishment; they're just incapable of thought; a chemical mishap in the brain means they are denied the most basic birthright of every human.

In some ways, I see his view as similar to describing cancer as 'an alternative way of functioning.'
