If done correctly, a novice linear progression only lasts a few months anyhow. So he won't be squatting 3x/week for long. Though food for thought, Mike Tuchscherer squats 3x/week and he seems kinda strong (squats Rip style too).

I suggest picking up Practical Programming along with SS, it teaches programming beyond the novice level.
