The Good Soldier Svejk by Jaroslav Hasek.
It's a sort of Catch 22, but written about four decades earlier, and about WWI.
An episode appears in there is borrowed from Hasek's own life. For a while, he was editor of a periodical on animals - it was called something like Animal World. After a while trying to make a career of it, and writing about real animals, he just got bored. So he started inventing animals, and the magazine carried supposedly factual accounts of species of whales that spray acid out of their bladders.
Needless to say, eventually he got fired.
