I'm gonna disagree with Kman on this point:
I bench to chest, but you only "need to" come to chest in a PL competition. Granted, you don't want an artificially shallow bench, but an inch or two off your chest to spare your shoulders is no sin.
You already made the right conclusion to squat lighter. You'll get better development with a lighter but deeper squat anyway.
You can look into BB hack squats, Jefferson squats or hip belt squats as safer alternatives...
i think if you develop a good arch, i dont think it would matter going to your chest, your shoulders would be fine.
