a friend of mine who used to compete in powerlifting and squatted around 550 has some sort of chronic lower back injury that comes and goes. it sucks because it prevents him from consistent heavy lifting. he said that it all started when he shot his butt up on a squat attempt and had to "good morning" the rest of the lift.
he saw that i was doing the same thing and helped me eliminate it. if Rippetoe did advise that, i don't see how it's good advice.
