The one lift I don't normally worry about them on is the deadlift, unless I'm doing it for lots of reps in which case they help at least keep the load closer together, otherwise they slip further apart and eventually unbalance the barbell as well.

First time I tried doing an oly lift, C&J, with my barbell, I got a nasty shock as the spinlocks clamped whilst the hands and arms were rotating under the barbell; didn't make that mistake twice. Using a small space to maintain the spin between [plates and spinlocks, seems to work fine though, I get the best of both worlds, safety and spinning plates.
