I like straps. I lift heavier things with them. I am however using them less on deadlifts right now. Not a grip thing, but seeing if it toughens my hands up any as they keep tearing open on power shrugs when they get over 500 pounds for reps.
Do you cut down your calluses? I routinely cut down the calluses under my ring fingers then slowly let them build back up over time. Never had a single tear or problem other than a couple blisters when I let them get too thick.
