Have you tried both heat and compression (with movement)? Depending on the area, and the severity of the "strain," rest with active compression/movement is all that seems to work for me.
I found that of interest too, given that after operations and such, compression stockings are used (I know it aids in return of blood to the heart and such but it's still due to inflammation after the op). We also know that the body self-splints injured areas, so to take away or attempt to reduce that splint-like force which is there for our own protection, at the end of the day, can't be a good thing either.

Some years ago, when I was a little kiddy, about 11y/o, I also came across a piece (in a book ) that stated that the West tended to use ice with bruising where the East tended to use warmth...the next time I ended up with a huge bruise, I did as they suggested and gently massaged the area whilst it was immersed in warm water and strangely it healed faster and felt a lot better the day after.
