Just to summarise, a few key elements for a good abdominal exercise:

1) Unloads the spine.
2) Has the ability to progress in some way, preferably adding weight.
3) Recruits surrounding areas, legs/arms/hips etc.

Not that I think too much about how I'll train my abs! But that short checklist is generally what I'll look for.
