I believe in them, although probably not for the same reason all the bodybuilders do. I believe bodybuilders use "shock" workouts to spur further growth. I like shock workouts so that my routine doesn't become stagnant. I stick to a pretty basic routine for years at a time and it can get a little hum-drum after months of doing the same stuff, but I know that's what it takes to get good at it. So to combat that I throw in some shock workouts once in a while. One of my favorite shock workouts is a 50 rep squat (ala Dr. Ken) or some odd finisher like farmers walks or sandbag lifts. Try something unexpected to spice things up, it helps combat the ADD routine changing that we all fight with.
