Probably the way nature meant it. Eat a little bit when you're hungry. Watch a child. My 4 year old will grab a box of Goldfish (or whatever), pour some in a dish, sit down and nibble for a bit, then run off and play. Come back later and finish the rest. We don't push her too hard at the designated mealtimes, because she fends for herself throughout the day.
Several small meals seems best to me.
