Overall it was a good learning experience and I'll be testing my deadlift and squat max this week as well. I may be able to hit something between 275 and 300, but I didn't try. I went from 225, 250, 275, 300. Maybe that was part of the problem?

bodyweight: 202.5

1rm bench 24 OCT 11: 250 lbs
1rm bench 24 JAN 12: 275 lbs
A 25 pound bump in 3 months at that level is very good progress. I was at 350 for 3 years without making progress.

I will also add that 5 pounds can make a world of difference. One weight can feel super easy, but add 5 pounds and it could feel like moving the Earth. 300 might have been a fail, nut 290 or 295 might have been a huge success.

You have make great progress. Nothing less.
