i read an awesome quote the other day about how weak people become when you help them... i'm going to try to find it. it was a STAR WARS quote of all things, but it was great.
"If you seek to aid everyone that suffers in the galaxy, you will only weaken yourself … and weaken them. It is the internal struggles, when fought and won on their own, that yield the strongest rewards… If you care for others, then dispense with pity and sacrifice and recognize the value in letting them fight their own battles."
while this is obviously an extreme example (and fiction), it struck me how this idea is almost perverse in our culture, when really IMO it can apply. we shouldn't go around expending weaker people, but i do believe in "teaching a man to fish" over "giving a man some fish".
