I was glad to have finally made it to the Fitness First in Hornsby Sydney, where Spartigus (Marco) trains, in a small section off to one side labelled 'Free Weights'.
This was my first shock; I may not have set foot in a gym for 8 years, but I didn't know it could ever get this bad. Slap my momma.
My second shock was that there were so many examples of squat-rack curlers and upper-body trainers taking up the few squat/HS racks that were available with barbell curling and shrugging.
And a good half dozen bicep warriors were DB curling and pressing like true members of the Zyzz entourage (I didn't get to see him. Such a shame) in that they seemed to spend more time looking at themselves in the enormous floor-to-ceiling mirrors covering two of the 3 walls separating us from the treadmill army.
I told Spart I hadn't trained in so long I had no agenda, and we should just follow his schedule. It was press day, and the first thing Marco and I dealt with was his bench form.
Not long before I filmed this vid we'd had to drag a spare bench into the HS rack and I'd been giving Spart some pointers when an older gentleman remarked:
"Isn't that bad for your spine?", referring to Spart's now pronounced back arch. I said no, as it followed the natural curvature of the spine.
"I've never seen that before." he followed. I shrugged my shoulders. "I learned it from Powerlifters."
He left after that, and made a regular bench available for us to continue practicing.
Then it was on to some 'lazy man's clean pressing', where Spart taught me a thing or two about fast twitch muscle fibres, and how they are awesome.
At my suggestion we finished off with some 'bro muscle' training - pinwheel curls (to fit in
) and I was pretty much spent by then, so we called it a day and grabbed a Boost Juice.
