Exactly.

Interestingly, it has a very similar story arc to Thor.

Backstory.
Hero granted powers.
Hero not ready/worthy of using them.
Hero must overcome character flaws to save the day.
Hero does just that and saves the day.

Part of it is Ryan Reynolds. I know he is a decent actor, but I have seen in him very few movies where he can make me CARE about his character.

Now, the dude playing Sinestro, HE was interesting. He had me hanging on his every word for what he would say or do next.
