Welcome to the forum. When I was in the Army I had to do about a 1000 flutterkicks each day.

BBG made the point that he's never received any benefit from machines. I have mental issues with machines as well. They don't feel the same, so I've generally always avoided them.

BBG also mentioned lateral raises. I believe them to be one of the most over-rated exercises in the iron game.

And Brawny talk about effectiveness and exercise selection. That's how I generally plan my workouts. I use the most effective. Sometimes I'll try a different exercise as an experiment, but I rarely keep an exercise that doesn't feel effective.
